| Abstract: | Martin stands out as the pioneering expert who first introduced the dichotomy between "explicit evaluation" and "implicit evaluation," highlighting the functional differentiation between these two concepts. His in-depth examinations of the selection of ideational meanings, the linguistic mechanisms underlying the invocation of evaluations, and the processes by which they are evoked have significantly advanced subsequent scholarly inquiries. Nonetheless, his work also identifies areas for further refinement, such as the exploration of the covert category within the sub-systems of Appraisal, the intricate relationship between evaluation and context, and the identification of markers for implicit evaluation, leaving ample room for further research and development. This paper employs the method of literature review to systematically sort through and comprehensively analyze Martin's main viewpoints on implicit evaluation as presented in his extensive array of publications. It provides an extensive overview of Martin’s scholarly contributions to the field of implicit evaluation, summarizing the relevant assertions found in his publications. Additionally, the paper critically assesses the strengths and limitations of his research, aiming to offer insights into potential future directions for implicit evaluation studies. The intention is to provide a comprehensive reference for both theoretical and practical advancements in the study of implicit evaluation. |
